Continental Tour on Rekortan at the Hoërskool Stadium, Stellenbosch, South Africa

A great competition at one of the world’s most beautiful track venues.

Fast times, bold racing, and breakthrough performances defined the Cape Milers Club World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger on 10 April, as athletes lit up the Hoërskool Stadium in Stellenbosch (RSA) on a Rekortan track installed by Trompie Sport.

Men’s 3000m: Motsau Marks Powerful Comeback

South African 3000m record holder Jerry Motsau is making a commanding return to form. After time on the sidelines due to injury, he delivered a standout performance to win the 3000m in 7:45.61.

The run signals a strong resurgence for the athlete who previously set the national record at 7:40.99, reaffirming his place among South Africa’s elite distance runners. His winning time also set a new Cape Milers Club 3000m record.

Motsau controlled the race from the gun, leading throughout and showcasing a seamless blend of strength and speed. Keanu Domingo stayed in contention for six laps before Motsau surged again in the closing stages to secure victory, with Domingo finishing second in 8:01.65.

A former South African champion in both the 1500m and 5000m, Motsau’s versatility continues to set him apart, and this performance confirms he is once again a major force on the track.

Men’s 800m: Haingura Delivers Another Dominant Win

Botswana’s middle-distance star Kethobogile Haingura once again showcased his class in Stellenbosch.

The defending champion powered to victory in 1:45.60, reinforcing his status as one of the region’s leading 800m athletes. Returning to the Cape Milers stage where he set the club record at the 2025 meeting in Cape Town, Haingura proved his consistency and competitive edge with another commanding performance.

His latest win further cements his reputation as a standout performer on the continental circuit.

Men’s 1500m: Munnik Shines as Malungane Makes History

South Africa’s Luan Munnik delivered a statement performance, storming to victory in a personal best 3:34.66.

The reigning South African champion faced a formidable challenge in Botswana’s Tshepiso Masalela, a seven-time national champion, 3:30 performer, 2025 Cape Milers record holder, and the fastest ever over 1500m on African soil. On the day, however, Munnik was in complete control.

Executing his race plan to perfection, he stayed composed before unleashing a decisive kick with 200m to go, surging past Masalela in the closing stages.

So dominant was his finish that he began celebrating with 60m remaining, still crossing the line in a blistering personal best. His time ranks him as the seventh fastest South African of all time over 1500m, underlining his rise as a major force in middle-distance running.

Further down the field, history was made by 16-year-old Tiisetso Malungane, who broke the long-standing South African U18 1500m record with an outstanding 3:42.46, a mark that had stood for over 43 years. Competing fearlessly in a senior elite field, Malungane’s performance signals the emergence of an exciting new talent in South African athletics.

Women’s 3000m: Kavanagh Dominates in Record-Breaking Run

Tyla Kavanagh produced a dominant, front-running performance to claim victory in the women’s 3000m.

Running solo from the gun, the Hollywood Athletics Club and adidas athlete set a relentless, metronomic pace across the 7½ laps, stopping the clock at an outstanding 8:46.86, a new Cape Milers Club record, to the applause of an appreciative crowd.

The performance also marks a lifetime best and elevates Kavanagh to fifth on the all-time South African list over 3000m, underlining her exceptional form this season.

Men’s 100m: Omanyala Opens Season with Victory

The men’s 100m featured Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala (9.77), making his season debut.

The Kenyan sprint star opened his campaign with a win in 10.19, a solid start as he builds momentum for the season ahead.

Congratulations to all athletes and organisers on delivering a world-class event.
