Sam Ruthe’s Remarkable Summer
Running fast on Rekortan in New Zealand.
New Zealand’s 2025/26 athletics summer has delivered one of the most exciting middle-distance storylines in recent years, with teenage talent Sam Ruthe producing a sequence of remarkable performances across 800m, 1,500m, the mile, 3,000m and 5,000m distances.
Still in the early stages of his career, Ruthe has combined tactical maturity and speed to post times that have reshaped the national record books. He now holds every New Zealand men’s U20 record from 800m through 5,000m and has posted several of the fastest global marks ever recorded by an athlete under 16.
Record start
In December 2025, at the start of the NZ season, Ruthe set senior boys' records at the New Zealand high schools’ championships in Hastings, in both the 800 and 1500 metres, with times of 1:46.81 and 3:38.62 respectively.
Extending the range with 5,000m debut record
On 20 December Ruthe then delivered a standout performance at the Night of 5s in Auckland, breaking the New Zealand U20 record in his first-ever 5,000m. His 13:40.48 debut, achieved at AUT Millennium on a Rekortan Gel track, added yet another milestone to a season defined by versatility and progression.
To prove that he didn’t rest over the New Year, on 3 January 2026, Ruthe ran 1000 metres on his home Rekortan track in Tauranga, in 2:17.82, a world’s best for a 16 and 17 year old.
Shortest race, fastest time
On 17 January, he returned to the Rekortan track in Hastings, and this time he lowered his 800 metres personal best to 1:45.86 as he won the Potts Classic. Ruthe, moved past his training partner, Olympian Sam Tanner (NZL) with 200m to run, and held off a late charge to win in 1:45.86, reinforcing his range and competitive instincts.
A week later he ran the fastest mile by a 16-year-old with 3:53.83 on the Rekortan track at the Cooks Classic in Whanganui.

Global arrival on the Boston stage
In his first ever indoor mile, Ruthe’s mile at the John Thomas Terrier Classic at Boston University marked his first race against a truly world‑class field - Olympians, a world champion, and a US national champion among them. He responded with a stunning 3:48.88, setting a world U18 mile record and also breaking the world U18 1,500m best with his split of 3:33.25.
This performance signalled his arrival on the global stage.
NZ Championships & Looking ahead
On 7 March, 2026 Ruthe won the men’s 1500m at the NZ Track & Field National Championships on Rekortan at the Douglas Track and Field stadium in Auckland. He led throughout the race winning by over six seconds in 3:41.43. He is confirmed for the prestigious Bowerman Mile at the Prefontaine Classic and is then targeting the Commonwealth Games and World Junior Championships in July and August.
All eyes on Sam
Ruthe’s summer showcases the rise of an exceptional young athlete whose talent, composure and range continue to redefine what’s possible at his age.
We are very proud that Sam’s home track is a Rekortan track in Tauranga, and that many of his accomplishments to date have been on Rekortan tracks, including Rekortan Gel, the world’s only gel track.
